Tikriausiai pastebėjote, kad prasidėjo Pasaulio lietuvių centro Kryžių kalnelio atnaujinimo projektas, kurio tikslas garbingai atstatyti senstančius medinius kryžius, pagrąžinti aplinkinį gamtovaizdį ir išsaugoti šią brangią vietą ateities kartoms. Džiaugiamės galėdami Jus informuoti apie kalnelio priešistoriją, atnaujinimo projekto planus ir šiuo metu atliekamus darbus.

Sugrįžkime beveik 20 metų atgal į Kryžių kalnelio gimimą. 2006 m. Pasaulio lietuvių centras ėmėsi naujo projekto – pastatyti didžiają sporto salę, šiandien vadinamą Ritos Riškienės vardu. Projektas buvo didžiulis – daugybė bendruomenės narių ir sporto entuziastų prisidėjo prie jo kūrimo, finansavimo ir vykdymo. Kaip ir bet kurio tokio dydžio projekto, sporto salės statybos turėjo milžiniškus kaštus, todėl svarbus buvo kiekvienas sutaupytas doleris. Didžiulė žemių krūva, kasant pamatus salei, nusėdo pastato priekyje, nes buvo tiesiog per brangu ją išvežti. Bet šviesus protas mato galimybę kiekvienoje situacijoje. Ta žemių krūva, metams bėgant, virto PLC dvasinės ramybės oaze – Kryžių kalneliu.

Gerbiamas dr. Romas Povilaitis sukūrė, savo rankomis pagamino, gintaro imitacija ir Rūpintojėlio atvaizdais padabino daugybę Kryžių kalnelio kryžių. Jis sukūrė mums Lietuvos dalelę. Ilgainiui čia ėmė glaustis kitų žmonių ir lietuviškų organizacijų kryžiai, kryželiai, sukurdami šventą vietą norintiems pasimelsti, pamastyti, pabūti tyloje. Kalnelis taip pat tapo simboline vieta per Vėlines, nes šeimos galėjo uždegti žvakelę už Lietuvoje palaidotus artimuosius. Dr. Povilaitis, kol leido sveikata, kaskart atvykęs į Pasaulio lietuvių centrą, paglostydavo kryželius, patiesindavo, paremontuodavo griūvančius, juos nuolat globojo. Tačiau ilgainiui gamtos elementų alinamiems kryžiams nebeužteko dr. Povilaičio mylinčių rankų darbo. 2021 metais, jis kreipėsi į Pasaulio lietuvių centrą su prašymu perimti Kryžių kalnelio globą ir tam tikslui padovanojo pradinę auką. Suprasdami šio kalnelio svarbą lietuvių bendruomenei, mielai sutikome perimti priežiūros darbus. Tuo metu Kryžių kalnelyje stovėjo apie 70 kryžių, ir tik keletas iš jų buvo naujesni – visiems kitiems jau būtinai reikėjo profesionalios restauracijos. Taip ant PLC administracijos stalo atsirado dar vienas didelis ir atsakingas projektas. Svarstėme, kaip toliau vygdyti Kryžių kalnelio atnaujinimo darbus, nes žinojome, kad gerai juos atlikti reikės ne tik žinių, bet laiko ir lėšų, kurie jau ir taip beveik šimtu procentu skiriami įvairiems pastato priežiūros darbams.

Ir tada įvyko stebuklas. Po Pasaulio lietuvių centro 2022 m. vasaros mugės, gavome netikėtą skambutį iš lietuviškų šaknų turinčių dvynukų Suelynn Hanegraaf ir Stan Seianas, kuris yra profesionalus landšafto architektas. Visai netrukus, Suelynn ir Stan tikslingai apsilankė Pasaulio lietuvių centre, Kryžių kalnelyje ir, matydami jo nesaugią ir nusidėvėjusią būklę – įtrūkusias kryžių sijas, voverių apgriaužtas Rūpintojėlių statulėles, pūvančią medieną ir kt. – pasisiūlė parengti Kryžių kalno atnaujinimo planą. Su dėkingumu priėmėme planą, kuris buvo paruoštas 2023 m. pavasarį, ir pradėjomė ieškoti restauracijos meistrų ir projekto rėmėjų. Esame dėkingi Čikagos lietuvių Rotary klubui, kuris apsiėmė finansuoti varpinės restauraciją.

Visi kryžiai buvo nufotografuoti, atidžiai suregistruoti, sunumeruoti, nuosekliai įvertinta kiekvieno jų būklė. Buvo nustatyta, kad Kryžių kalnelio paviršius yra nelygus ir „judantis“. Supratome, kad reikės išlyginti kalnelio paviršių, ir dėl tos priežasties laikinai nuimti visus kalnelyje stovėjusius kryžius. Kai radome restauravimo meistrą, viskas tarsi savaime sugulė į vietas. Šiais metais, kol dar leidžia oras, ėmėmės planų įgyvendinimo. Ruošdamiesi kalnelio paviršiaus lyginimui, pašalinome kai kuriuos sergančius medžius ir laikinai nuėmėmė suoliukus bei kryžius. Užuot leidę kryžiams toliau nykti gamtos elementuose, nusprendėme šiuos tikėjimo ir vilties simbolius nuvežti į meistro dirbtuves, kur jie bus profesionaliai atnaujinami: džiovinami, taisomi ir sandarinami su tikslu prailginti jų amžių. Apie planus informavome ir kiekviename žingsnyje tarėmės su dr. Povilaičiu ir jo šeima, kurie davė palaiminimą šiam planui. Kryžiai saugiai praleis žiemą dirbtuvėse o vasarą, atgimus gamtai, po truputį atgims ir kryžiai, sugrįš į Kryžių kalną – pagarbos ir tikėjimo kupiną erdvę mums visiems melstis ir švęsti savo ryšį su Dievu.

The aim of the 2023-2024 rejuvenation of the Lithuanian World Center’s Hill of Crosses: to pay homage to a beloved spiritual habitat

You may have noticed that the rejuvenation project of the Lithuanian World Center’s Hill of Crosses has begun, with the aim of respectfully restoring the aging wooden crosses, restoring the surrounding landscape, and preserving this precious place for future generations. We are pleased to inform you about the history of the hill, the plans for the project, and the work currently underway.

Let’s go back almost 20 years to the birth of the Hill of Crosses at the Lithuanian World Center (LWC). In 2006, the LWC embarked on a new project – the construction of a large gymnasium, today named after Rita Riškus. The project was huge – many community members and sports enthusiasts contributed to its creation, financing, and execution. As with any project of this magnitude, the cost of building the gym was enormous, so every dollar saved was important. A huge pile of earth from the excavation of the hall’s foundations was moved to the front of the building because it was simply too expensive to remove from the premises entirely. But a bright mind sees opportunity in every situation. That pile of earth, over the years, has become an oasis of spiritual peace for the LWC – the Hill of Crosses.

Our beloved Dr. Romas Povilaitis designed, handcrafted, and decorated many crosses on the Hill of Crosses with imitation amber and images of the Pensive Christ (“Rūpintojėlis”). He created a piece of Lithuania for us. Eventually, other crosses were erected by individuals and local organizations, creating a sacred place for those who wanted to pray, reflect, and sit in silence. The hill also became a symbolic place during All Souls’ Day, as families could light a candle for their loved ones buried in Lithuania. Dr. Povilaitis, as long as his health permitted, came to the LWC often to repair those crosses that were falling down, and to constantly care for as many as he could. However, as time went on, even the loving attention of Dr. Povilaitis was not enough to maintain the now large number of crosses, which were being worn away by the elements. In 2021, he approached the LWC with a request for our Administration to take over the care of the Hill of Crosses and made an initial donation. Understanding the importance of this cultural and spiritual landmark to the Lithuanian community, we gladly agreed to take over the maintenance. At that time, there were about 70 crosses on the Hill of Crosses, and only a few of them were newer – all the others were in dire need of professional restoration. This presented us with yet another challenge: how to proceed with the renovation of the Hill of Crosses, knowing that to do it well would require not only knowledge, but also time and money, much of which was already allocated to ongoing repair and maintenance tasks around the Center.

And then a miracle happened. After the LWC 2022 Summer Picnic & Craft Fair, we received an unexpected phone call from twins with Lithuanian roots, Stan Seianas, who is a professional landscape architect and his sister, Suelynn Hanegraaf. Soon after, Suelynn and Stan made a visit to our facility and the Hill of Crosses, and after seeing its unsafe and dilapidated state (including sagging cross beams, squirrel-ravaged statues, decaying wood, etc.), Stan offered to draw up plans for the rejuvenation and beautification of the Hill of Crosses. We gratefully accepted his plan, proposed in the spring of 2023, and started looking for restoration craftsmen and project sponsors. We are grateful to the Rotary Club of Chicagoland Lithuanians, which has pledged to fund the restoration of the bell tower.

Suelynn, along with our staff, catalogued and photographed each of the crosses, even spending time to assess each cross’ condition. It was clear that the surface of the hill was uneven and unstable, so plans have been put in place to regrade it. For this reason, all of the crosses on the hill would have to be temporarily removed. Once we found a restoration specialist, everything fell into place. This year, before the cold weather descends upon us, we have set about implementing our plans. In preparation for the regrading, we have removed some diseased trees and temporarily taken down all of the benches, monuments, and crosses. Rather than allow the crosses to continue to decay in the natural elements, these symbols of faith and hope will be transported to our craftsman’s workshop where they will be professionally restored by drying, repairing, and sealing them in order to prolong their age. We informed and discussed the plans every step of the way with Dr. Povilaitis and his family, who gave their blessing to this plan. In the summer, as nature comes back to life, the crosses will also come back to life and return to the Hill of Crosses, a place of reverence and faith for all of us to pray and celebrate our relationship with God.

Note: Every year at Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Mission, it is a beautiful tradition to light candles after All Souls’ Mass, take them to the LWC Hill of Crosses and place them near the bell tower or crosses. Don’t be disappointed that there are no crosses on the hill this year. We invite you to gather instead around the “koplytstulpiai” located at the front west side of the LWC after all three masses on November 1^st (8am, 4pm, and 7pm) to light candles together in peace, unity and harmony, as we remember our dearly departed loved ones.

May 11^th, 2023 is an important day of change in the history of the Lithuanian World Center. On this date, Linas Gylys retired from his 15-year position as LWC Executive Committee President.

Linas Gylys and his family became involved with the Lithuanian World Center shortly after the building was purchased and, as he has often remarked, the Center soon became their second home. In 2008, Linas was appointed to the role of Executive Committee President by then-Board Chairman, Paul Majauskas.  For 15 years, Linas volunteered his time to help the administration and staff manage the day-to-day activities of the Center and its upkeep. His love for the Lithuanian World Center and caring attitude towards the organization and our staff has become an example for all those who work here and those who also call the Center their second home. Linas stopped by the Center almost daily, checking in on the staff, offering his help, resolving issues big and small, leading tours of LWC, and interacting with our staff and visitors alike.

We are very grateful to Linas Gylys for his amazing commitment to the Lithuanian World Center and are excited that he will stay on as a Board member, continuing to make a difference.

In light of this resignation, LWC Board Chairman, Marius Polikaitis, recommended Dainius Petronis to step into this critical role.  On May 11^th, 2023, the LWC Board approved this appointment.  Congratulations to Dainius on his new responsibilities as President! Dainius has been a long-time member of the Board, is a frequent volunteer at our events, and has actively contributed his expertise and knowledge on many of our building maintenance and repair projects. In searching for a replacement for Linas Gylys, both Marius and Linas considered Dainius at the top of their list.  We are delighted that the Board confirmed Dainius’ appointment to this role, and have no doubt that he will guide the day-to-day operations at the Center magnificently. We wish Dainius the best of luck!

Marketplace

In ancient times, Lithuania had marketplaces where goods were brought to be exchanged, and later sold. They were surrounded by mobile homes, hostels, taverns, warehouses and craftsmen’s workshops. The number of markets increased dramatically in the second half of the 16th and early 17th centuries.

Markets promoted agricultural production, crafts and industry, and helped cities and towns to expand. Markets were held one to three times a week, depending on the size of the settlement, the number of inhabitants and the number of merchants in the area. Peasants and landlords sold grain, flax, honey, wax, hemp, furs, pigs, cattle, horses and birds, while craftsmen sold sledges, carts, wheels, tubs, harnesses, farm implements, household and domestic items. Market traders had to comply with the Vilnius weights (stones and pounds), which were used to pay the market fee to the manor governor or the city council, e.g. shopkeepers paid a graš to the Grand Duke’s court for each day they traded in the market, while butchers paid a sheep’s ham.

St. Casimir Fair

St. Casimir Fair dates back to the early 17th century. On November 7, 1602, Pope Clement VIII officially proclaimed Casimir a saint, and in 1636, Urban VIII proclaimed him a saint. St. Casimir was made the patron saint of Lithuania by St. Urbina. In the same year, the saint’s relics were solemnly transferred from the Jesuits‘ St. Casimir Church, where they had been preserved since 1604, and transferred to a specially built chapel in Vilnius Cathedral, where they remain to this day. It is believed that it was the transfer of the Saint’s remains in 1636 that began the history of the Kaziukas Fair. This is when the Cathedral began to host the Feast of St. Casimir, and the so-called “kermos” (from the German “kirchmesse”), the trade and entertainment following the church festivities, has always been an integral part of the feast.

In 1827, Vilnius merchants secured the privilege of organizing a larger, multi-day market, the so-called “jomarka” (from the German “jahrmarkt” and Russian “jarmarka”). This was the beginning of the real St. Casimir Fair. Not only Vilnius residents participated, but merchants from further afield came, well.  Therefore, “būdos”, temporary shelters or tents, were set up in the Cathedral Square.

The most important item for sale at the fair is a heart-shaped biscuit called “Kaziuko širdis”, decorated with drawings, names or special symbols. Another traditional purchase is the “barankių” (bagel) necklace. Many people also go to the fair to buy “verbos” (dried flower bouquets) and handmade tools used in everyday life.

Mardi Gras (Užgavėnės)

The ancient rites of banishing winter are identified with Mardi Gras. The Catholic celebration is held 46 days before Easter, usually in February, always on a Tuesday. On the last day before Lent, a last large and fatty meal is allowed, and the next day Lent begins, which lasts until Easter.

It has always been believed that eating a full, fatty meal on Mardi Gras will keep you strong throughout the year. The traditional Mardi Gras meal in Lithuania is pancakes (usually flour or yeast pancakes). On Mardi Gras, every person who visited another’s home had to take a bite of headcheese and other meat dishes, so that no meats remained, as the fasting period of Lent begins the following day, on Ash Wednesday.

One of the most important customs of Mardi Gras is dressing up, disguising oneself as beasts, animals, strangers, devils, witches, demons etc. The masqueraders would put on the scariest possible masks made of tree bark or fur. Festival activities included a fight between the fat Salmon and the skinny Canary which depicted the battle between winter and spring. At the end of the festival, the Morė, a symbol of winter, was usually burnt (sometimes drowned) and the ashes scattered in the fields to banish the evil and pesky winter.

Palm Sunday (Verbų sekmadienis)

Palm Sunday is a Christian feast celebrated on the last Sunday before Easter.

In Lithuania, it was believed that on Palm Sunday, everyone must hold onto a juniper branch or other palm in church. It was believed that the consecrated palm, brought into the house, protected the faithful from all evil. On Palm Sunday, it was a tradition to use consecrated junipers and willow branches to protect oneself from possible disasters. Such branches were burned in rooms and fields as incense. People used to keep the palms all year round, and only when the next Palm Sunday approached, according to the ancients, could it be burned.  Under no circumstances could it be thrown away.

The most notable custom of Palm Sunday is the whipping of the palm. That morning, the earliest of risers whip those who are still sleeping. They would say: “It is not I who is whipping; the palm is! Easter is six days away”.

Pagan hymns

Before Christianity was accepted in Lithuania, these hymns are often sung about various Lithuanian (also Latvian and Prussian) gods, often mentioning “Žemyna”, “Perkūnas”, “Gabija”, “Saulė” and others. Ghosts are also very important in these hymns, as well as the nine-horned deer. It is believed that this genre may be one of the oldest in Lithuanian folk music.

This genre has either a pagan or Christian focus, and the Christian sub-genre is very new compared to the others. Most of the hymns of Christian Lithuania originated from the combination of Christian texts with folk melodies, and began to take shape in the 16th and 17th centuries with the Christianization of the peasantry. Some of the hymns are syncretic in nature and contain elements of the old pagan faith.

Sutartinės:

Sutartinės– Lithuanian multipart songs – are a unique phenomenon of traditional Lithuanian music, born before the Christianization of Lithuania and widespread throughout Aukštaitija, the north-eastern region of Lithuania. Sutartinės (from the word sutarti – to be in concordance) are a phenomenon of traditional Lithuanian music – an extremely old form of polyphonic music that emerged even before the Christianization of Lithuania. It was the general aspiration to “mutually agree” and “be in concordance” that determined the origin of the name. A characteristic feature of all Sutartinės is the simultaneous sound of different melodies and texts. Sutartinės are a syncretic (the merging of elements of different religions) art form which reflects the connection between word, music and dance.

A distinctive feature of Lithuanian multipart songs is that harmony is created by accords of dissonant intervals – seconds. These accords are considered a paradox in European music theory.

Lithuanian multi-part songs were inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on November 16, 2010, by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Clear amber

Clear amber (with a yellowish tinge) makes up about 10% of all amber hues and is mostly found in small pieces. Larger pieces of clear amber are particularly rare and valuable. This color of amber could be described as ‘primary’, as this is the color of fresh tree resin. About 97% of all inclusions are found in such amber. At the end of the 18th century, almost colorless, clear amber was used in the manufacture of optical articles. In 1691, the master craftsman Christian Pershin made lenses and glasses from amber for the first time.

Yellow amber

This is the most common amber hue (about 70% of all colors). Resin flowed from the trees in the sun’s reflection, so the evaporation of the volatile components of the resin caused it to shatter, i.e. forming thousands of tiny gas bubbles. The more bubbles there are, the lighter the shade of yellow. Yellow amber is an important part of a woman’s national dress. In the past, it was used in marriage rituals, hung over a child’s bed and in the Stone Age, was used to make amulets, as yellow amber was believed to be a sun stone.

OAK TREE

The oak is the most important tree in Baltic folklore and mythology. In the sacred forests, under the centuries-old oak trees, people prayed, offered sacrifices to mythical gods, gathered to discuss important matters, and settled issues of war and peace. It was prohibited to break even a branch or hunt there. Only in the case of mortal danger could a person enter the sacred forests, and ancient heralds cut firewood only with sacred axes.

The oak tree has a special characteristic: it is an evergreen tree that does not shed its leaves all year round. Its durability, wood strength and resistance to autumn have mythologically linked the oak to the god Perkūnas, patron of warriors.

BIRCH TREE

The birch is the tree of life and renewal. The energy of birch awakens the human energetic field, has a refreshing effect, banishes bad moods, irritation, depression and anxiety. When spring comes, many Lithuanians drink the tree‘s juices. The plant not only refreshes people with its sap, but it also has more healing properties. It is believed to cleanse the soul and help purge the body of unnecessary substances. In the past, people and animals were gently beaten by birch twigs in an effort to drive the devil away. Perhaps that is why Lithuanians still use birch “vantas“ in their baths. Birch is also believed to help the body stay young longer. Nurseries were made of birch wood, with the goal of protecting the purity of babies.

Did you know that mushrooms are not a plant (neither grass, nor flower, nor tree, etc.)? What then? Mushrooms are a sort of intermediary between plants and animals, which is why biologists classify mushrooms as living organisms in their own right.

Chanterelles

• Chanterelles are one of the earliest summer mushrooms.
• Chanterelles are highly valued in the culinary world. It was the only mushroom eaten by Lithuanian Jews.
• The mushroom is never wormy and contains many useful substances: vitamins B1, B2, as well as D2, D3, copper and zinc. What gives the chanterelle its bright color?  You guessed it:  Vitamin A!  They contain as much Vitamin A as carrots!

Porcini (King Bolete) mushrooms

• Did you know that most mushroom caps are more valuable than their stems? While some mushrooms‘ stems aren‘t even used for food, the stalk of the King Bolete is even more valuable and nutritious than the caps of other mushrooms. That’s why other mushrooms have to take off their caps and bow down to this king!
• The bolete is one of the best known and most valuable mushrooms in Lithuania.
• It is highly nutritious – low in fat and carbohydrates, rich in protein, vitamins and minerals.
• It is not only the most nutritious mushroom, but also has healing properties:  in folk medicine, powdered dried porcini mushrooms are used to treat wounds.

KAUKAS

In Lithuanian mythology, Kaukas is the spirit of fertility, harvest, and wealth. Other names for Kaukas include Kaukutis, Kukas, and Pūkis. Kaukai spirits could be male or female, although males are more common. Kaukai were believed to visit or live in the homestead where they watched over its residents. It is said that Kaukai could be seen in the moonlight or on a foggy day. The annual spring festival, today known as Mardi Gras, was originally held in honor of the Kaukai spirits. The event was led by a masquerader called “boba” or “mother.” During the festival, participants wore masks (“kaukės”), dressed up as animals, and put horns on their heads.

AITVARAS

In Lithuanian mythology, Aitvaras is a divine creatue of the Pagan pantheon. He is the guardian of water, atmosphere, and clouds. Through his connection with the earth and its riches, Aitvaras brings people material wealth.

Aitvaras is commonly depicted as a rooster, heron, raven, air or fire serpent, black or fire staff, or a tornado breaking branches. Sometimes, Aitvaras is seen is a good creature and other times he is seen is a bad one. He works in secret without being asked. Aitvaras protects good people who have been wronged by others. He protects those who are not greedy and brings them all kinds of wealth: grain, flax, and money, usually taken from greedy rich people. Once a person has won favor with Aitvaras, he/she will experience no more misery, although the treasures brought by Aitvaras do not necessarily guarantee a positive future.

RUE

Rue, the national flower of Lithuania, is the most beloved and respected of all flowers in Lithuania. It is grown in every nursery and usually planted in the most glorious place, the central flower bed. Back in the day, rue was used in various ceremonies, including baptisms, First Communions, and weddings as well as funerals of unmarried young people. Grandparents used rue to treat various ailments such as gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiac diseases. Today, we might find the flavor of rue a little unusual, but historically, rue was also beloved for its taste. Lithuanians used to garnish freshly baked bread with butter and rue.

PEONY

The most commonly cultivated peonies in Lithuania are the great peony, the medicinal peony, the bush peony, the European peony and their varieties. Peony is also known as “pinavija” in Lithuania. Back in the day, peonies were loved and respected for their fragrant early blossoms, which were also used for medicinal purposes. Peonies were one of the main remedies for “fright” in adults and children, especially when they were frightened of something and then cried at night, jumping out of bed.

NIDA

• Nida is a resort town located on the Curonian Spit. It has about 200,000-300,000 visitors every summer (about 700,000 every year), many of them from Lithuania and Western Europe, especially Germany.
• The name Nida was first mentioned in the late 14th century in a description of Crusader war routes (Noyken).
• In 1675, when a sand drift threatened to cover Old Nida, its inhabitants moved north towards the Curonian Lagoon and, in 1732, they eventually settled in present-day Nida.
• Nida was a favorite summer destination of the Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann. His summer house has survived to this day and has become a cultural center with a memorial exhibition dedicated to the famous writer.
• The only way to get to Nida is to take a ferry across the Curonian Lagoon.
• The Curonian Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

PALANGA

• Palanga is a Samogitian resort town on the Baltic Sea.
• The first inhabitants settled in the territory of present-day Palanga around 3,000 BC.
• On August 20th, 1899, “America in the Bathhouse,” the first Lithuanian-language play performed in public in present-day Lithuania, was performed in Palanga.
• The Palanga Amber Museum, the largest in Lithuania, is located in the palace of Count Tiškevičius.
• The most famous street in Palanga is Basanavičiaus, or “Basankės.” Americans call “Basankė” the Lithuanian Las Vegas—it is truly an artery of fun! Every summer, more than 100 eateries open on J.Basanavičiaus Street.

ŠAKOTIS

The origins of šakotis (branch cake) can be traced back to 15th century Europe when it was made by monks according to carefully guarded recipes. Šakotis arrived in Lithuania at the beginning of the 20th century, when it began to be baked in monasteries. In German, šakotis is known as baumkuchen (tree cake). The shape of the dessert resembles a Christmas tree, with its “spikes” representing branches. By cutting the dessert in cross section, it is possible to count the number of times the dough has been poured. Šakotis is baked in different sizes, and has a mild taste and pleasant aroma. Today, there are about 60 known recipes for this dessert. Did you know that delicious Šakotis cakes are baked on a spit right here at the Lithuanian World Center? ŽAGARĖLIAI

Although Žagarėliai can be prepared in different ways, their dough is usually made of flour, eggs, butter, and sour cream. The stiff dough is kneaded, rolled out, and cut into strips, which are slit down the middle, twisted, and fried in hot fat (lard or oil). The crispy pastries are then dusted with confectioner’s sugar before being served. The type of dough used to make Žagarėliai is called “Jufka,” which is made by repeatedly rolling and folding the dough to create many, many layers, which puff up to form delightful “blisters” of pastry when cooked in oil.

Her Majesty, the Potato!

One of the greatest breakthroughs in the history of modern nutrition was the advent of the potato. Potatoes appeared in Europe in the 18th century and became more widespread in the 19th century, replacing the turnips and pumpkins that had previously dominated the dining table. Potatoes were especially important because they helped to stave off famine when climate conditions destroyed cereal crops. Before the 18th century, potatoes were considered exotic plants and used mostly for ornamental purposes.

KUGELIS

• The Lithuanian word “kugelis” comes from the German word “kugel,” meaning “ball.”
• Kugelis, the food, was invented by the Jewish community and eventually became a traditional Lithuanian dish.
• In other countries, kugelis is made from flour and cooked in the oven in round pots (“kugeltopf”). In Lithuania, kugelis is made primarily from potatoes and bits of bacon, or “spirgučiai.”
• The typical sauce for kugelis is made with more “spirgučiai” in sour cream, with optional mushrooms for extra flavor.

CEPELINAI

• Cepelinai, also known as “didžkukuliai,” first appeared in Lithuania around 100-150 years ago. It is thought that cepelinai were introduced to Lithuania in one of two ways. The first is through German Lithuania Minor and the second is through the Litvaks, the Jews of Lithuania, in whose taverns cepelinai could have been a very desirable dish.
• The first recipes for cepelinai in Lithuania were published in the 1935 edition of the cookbook “Ką valgome?“ (“What are we eating?“) edited by Elena Repčytė-Starkienė. The recipes instructed home chefs to use uncooked potato gratings.
• The Lithuanian word “cepelinas” comes from the German word “zeppelin,” which refers to the iconic airship invented and manufactured by Ferdinand von Zeppelin in the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries.
• Lithuanians enjoy eating cepelinai made from raw or boiled potatoes (or sometimes a mix of both). The center may contain a variety of fillings: meat, cottage cheese, or mushrooms. The typical sauce for cepelinai is made with sour cream, bacon, onions, and mushrooms.

KRUPNIKAS (Honey Mead)

Krupnikas was invented in 1593 by Benedictine monks who were staying at the Radvilas estate in Nesvyžius (present-day Belarus). For a long time, the liquor was only popular in Lithuania, but in the 19^th century it began to be enjoyed in Poland and other countries of the world.

The main ingredients of Krupnikas are natural bee honey and aromatic herbs. Before it is served, Krupnikas is usually stored for quite some time to allow for the blending of flavors into a unique and harmonious combination. This aging process allows the herbs and other densities to settle to the bottom, leaving behind a beautiful golden liquor.

TREJOS DEVYNERIOS (Triple Nines)

At the end of 19th century, Lithuanian pharmacies started producing the original mixture of herbs “Trejos devynerios” (Triple Nines). Documents from that time kept at the Museum of the History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy show that this mixture of herbs was first produced in Samogitia (Žemaitija), in a pharmacy in Palanga city. The leaflet informed that one pack of herbs should be infused with one bottle of “monopolist (exclusive) vodka” and kept for eight days.

Physicians and pharmacists recommended “Trejos devynerios” for indigestion, diarrhea, migraine attacks, cold, exhaustion, hoarseness, etc.

Important updates from the May 19th meeting of the Lithuanian World Center Board of Directors:

Congratulations to Marius Polikaitis, our new Chairman of the Board! Marius is a long-time member of the Lithuanian World Center Board of Directors. During his time as Treasurer (2018-2022), he took great care in helping the Center manage its finances. We know that Marius will be an excellent Chairman and thank him for taking on this leadership role!

Our previous Chairman, Jurgis Riškus, agreed to stay on as a member of the Board and to continue helping the Center reach its goal of serving the cultural, educational, and religious needs of the Lithuanian-American community. Jurgis has been an active member of the Board since the establishment of the Center in 1987. As Chairman (2010-2022), he led the Board in creating a vision for the Center, including development of strategic plans and helping the Center deal with challenges associated with the pandemic. Thank you, Jurgi, for your many years of hard work as Chairman! We really appreciate your dedication and leadership.

Justinas Andriušis, who became a member of our Executive Committee this February, will be taking over as Treasurer from Marius Polikaitis. We are confident that our finances are in good hands and are grateful to Justinas for taking on this role!

The Board also voted for Regina Saulienė to remain as Secretary. We thank Regina for her many years of service as Secretary and her continued dedication to the Lithuanian World Center.

KERNAVĖ

The annals of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Samogitia state that Duke Kernius not only founded the first capital of Lithuania around 1040, but also invented the name, Lithuania. Kernavė, which translates as “Kernius family estate,” is the place where Lithuania began. It was the cradle of the ancient Baltics and pagans, and perhaps even served as the capital of King Mindaugas himself. The hillfort mounds of Kernavė are steeped in legend. It is said that somewhere nearby there is an underground road from Kernavė to Trakai and Vilnius. The entrance to the tunnel is guarded by iron doors in Kernavė, silver doors in Trakai, and gold doors in Vilnius. In 2004, the archaeological site of Kernavė was included as a Cultural Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

VILNIUS

Legend has it that the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas stayed in the Šventaragis Valley for one night while hunting. In a dream, Gediminas saw a single iron wolf howling with the voice of a hundred. When he awoke, he sought out the wizard Lizdeika to explain the strange dream. The wizard explained that the howling wolf symbolizes a capital city that would stand there and whose renown would be recognized around the world. And so, in 1323, Gediminas began sending letters to European cities inviting merchants and artisans to visit the future city and capital of Lithuania – Vilnius.

KAUNAS

The status of Kaunas as a temporary capital has not been established by any official document. That being said, Kaunas became the de facto capital of Lithuania on January 2nd, 1919, after the interim government moved from Vilnius to Kaunas and remained there until 1939. In fact, the first President of Lithuania Antanas Smetona was elected in Kaunas on April 4, 1919. Kaunas became an important political, economic, and cultural center as many state institutions, universities, museums, and theaters were established there.

The Lithuanian World Center has come alive! So many activities take place under our roof and so many amazing events are born here, bringing so many people together to our facility.

Here’s a brief summary of some of the events that took place at the LWC during May 13 – 15, 2022.

On Friday and Saturday,  Maironis Lithuanian School students celebrated the completion of yet another school year, having gained much knowledge about Lithuanian culture, grammar and history.

On Saturday, our community enjoyed an exhibition and a heartwarming concert in honor of Dr. Juozas Kazickas. The works were performed by the Lithuanian Choral Ensemble Dainava and the Vyturys Children’s Choir, led by Music Director Darius Polikaitis, with poignant narration by Audrė Budrytė-Nakienė.

On Sunday morning, a group of Lithuanian American children received the sacrament of First Holy Communion.

Outdoors, the LWC Spring Fair took place under sunny skies.  Guests enjoyed delicious Lithuanian delicacies, unique crafts, stunning jewelry, and more!

At the same time, the International Children’s Dance Festival took place in Riškus Hall, which included performances by children of Lithuania, Polish, Slovenian and Ukrainian heritage!

COLD BEET SOUP – ŠALTIBARŠČIAI

• The earliest published recipes for cold beet soup appeared in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is widely believed that this soup was eaten much earlier, but Lithuanians did not yet have a tradition of writing down their recipes.
• Older recipes included cooked turkey, veal, crayfish necks and so much more.
• Cold beet soup didn’t always have the charming pink color we all know and love. Way back when, red beets were grown primarily by farmers of greater wealth and status. The less wealthy grew white beets and made them into a soup that was actually white in color!

SAUERKRAUT SOUP – RAUGINTŲ KOPŪSTŲ SRIUBA

• Although most people might guess that sauerkraut originated in Germany, it was actually invented in ancient China almost 2,000 years ago. The slaves who built the Great Wall learned to preserve the cabbage they were fed by placing it in rice wine, which made it sour.
• Since then, sauerkraut has spread all over the world thanks to sailors who loaded it onto their ships as a food option that helped to prevent scurvy.
• According to written sources, sauerkraut was already being enjoyed in the territory of Lithuania by the 13th century.
• Many people are averse to sauerkraut because of its smell, but it is considered to be one of the best natural sources of vitamins.

Gintare Radvila was elected onto the Lithuanian World Center Board of Directors at our April 3rd Annual Members’ Meeting.  Congratulations, Gintare!

Gintare Radvilaite was born in Chicago.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 2011 and earned her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2013.  Gintare began her law career as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Chicago and then spent four years representing plaintiffs in personal injury lawsuits at a boutique law firm in Chicago. Gintare is now an attorney at Lillig & Thorsness, Ltd. in Oakbrook.  She practices law in general civil litigation with a focus on commercial litigation, construction litigation, and personal injury.

The Lithuanian World Center has been a second home to Gintare for many years.  She attended Maironio Lituanistine Mokykla from a young age until she graduated. Gintare danced with the Lithuanian folk dance group Spindulys and then went on to dance with the dance ensemble Grandis for many years.  She was a long time member of Ateitininkai and attended camp Dainava in the summer.

A few years ago, Gintare wanted to give back to the Center which provided her with a sense of community and family from a young age.  Gintare volunteered her time to help organize the Holiday Craft Fair, and in 2021, she took over the “Lithuanian World Center Charity Golf Tournament” as a co-chair.

Gintare is known for being reliable, conscientious, and organized.  Gintare hopes to bring a new perspective and fresh ideas to the Board.

Gintarė Radvilaitė buvo ištinkta į Pasaulio lietuvių centro tarybą per metinį PLC narių susirinkimą kuris vyko 2022 m. balandžio 3 d.

Gintarė Radvilaitė gimė Čikagoje.  2011-ais metais ji įsigijo bakalauro laipsnį University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana ir 2013-ais metais įsigijo teisės laipsnį Chicago-Kent College of Law.  Gintarė pradėjo savo teisininkės karjerą Čikagoje kaip valstijos advokato padėjėja (Assistant State’s Attorney), o po to keturis metus atstovavo ieškovus asmeninių traumų ir sužalojimo bylose.  Dabar ji dirba “Lillig & Thorsness, Ltd.” advokatų kontoroje Oakbrook mieste. Ji praktikuoja teisinę veiklą civilinėse bylose, daugiausia dėmesio skirdama komercinėms, statybų ir asmeninių traumų/sužalojimų byloms.

Ilgą laiką Pasaulio lietuvių centras Gintarei buvo kaip antri namai.  Ji lankė Maironio lituanistinę mokykla nuo vaikystės iki kol ją pabaigė.  Gintarė šoko tautinių šokių grupėje “Spindulys”, o po to – daug metų tautinių šokių ansamblyje “Grandis”.   Gintarė taip pat dalyvavo ateitininkų veikloje ir “Dainavos” stovyklose. Ji žaidė tinklinį ir dabar laisvalaikio metu mėgsta sportuoti.

Prieš keletą metų Gintarė, pasiilgusi savo lietuviškų antrų namų, nusprendė vėl prisijungti prie centro veiklos ir gyvavimo.   Pradžioje ji savanoravo organizuojant Kalėdinę Mugę, o 2021-ais metais perėmė vice-pirmininkės pareigas, organizuojant labdaringą Pasaulio lietuvių centro golfo turnyrą.

Gintarė yra rūpestinga, organizuota ir sąžiningai atlieka jai patikėtas pareigas. Gintarė tikisi, kad ji galės pasiūlyti tarybai naujų idėjų ir kad jos, kaip teisininkės patirtis centrui bus naudinga.

Justinas Andriušis has joined the LWC Executive Committee.  Welcome aboard, Justinai!

Justinas was born, raised, and currently resides in the Chicagoland area with his wife, Julija, and their two sons, Rytas and Gintas. He attended Northern Illinois University, where he graduated with a degree in Economics. He currently works as a Business Development Executive for Morningstar, Inc.

Justinas has long been an active member of the Lithuanian community. He either currently or formerly has been a member of the Lithuanian Scouts Association, Lithuanian dance groups Spindulys and Grandis, Lituanica basketball, Dainava Lithuanian Chorale, Maironis Lithuanian School, as well as President of the Chicago Lithuanian Youth Union (Čikagos Lietuvių Jaunimo Sajunga). In addition, he has been an organizing member of Lithuanian Folk Dance Festivals (Šokių Šventės), Lithuanian Song Festivals (Dainų Šventės), as well as Lithuanian Sports Tournaments (Sporto Šventės) that have taken place in Chicago.

Justinas is excited to help grow and strengthen the Lithuanian community through both old and new ideas, so that future generations continue to have opportunities preserve, experience, and learn about their heritage and culture.

Justinas džiaugiasi, galėdamas prisidėti savo idėjomis prie lietuvių bendruomenės augimo ir stiprėjimo, kad ateities kartos turėtų galimybę saugoti, patirti, pažinti savo etninį paveldą ir kultūrą.

This year’s fashion show fundraiser was a fantastic success, raising over $30,000 for the Lithuanian World Center!  The event was organized by Milada Kunevičienė, Estera Kijajevienė, and Diana Aleknaitė, highlighted 14 uniquely talented designers, was sponsored by over a dozen companies, had prizes donated by more than 35 companies/individuals, had help from at least 30 volunteers, and welcomed almost 500 spectators, including the Consul General of the Republic of Lithuania in Chicago, Sigita Mulevičienė.

Prezidentą ir pirmąją ponią pievelėje prie paradinio įėjimo pasitiko centro direktorė Elena Rėklaitis, tarybos pirmininkas Jurgis Riškus ir valdybos pirmininkas Linas Gylys. Tautiniais kostiumais pasipuošę Maironio lituanistinės mokyklos mokinukai – devynmečiai Paula Juzėnas ir Alex O’Brien įteikė svečiams gėlių.

Pirmoji Lietuvos pora prie paminklo Lietuvos partizanų vadui Adolfui Ramanauskui-Vanagui pagerbė šį mūsų tautos didvyrį. Garbės sargyboje stovėjo Lietuvos šaulių sąjungos išeivijoje atstovai, Tautinių šokių grupių ,,Spindulys” ir ,,Suktinis” šokėjai.

Nausėda, prieš pasukdamas į PLC pastato vidų, dar kurį laiką pabendravo su pievelėje prie paminklo susibūrusiais žmonėmis. Su tautinių šokių šokėjais kalbėjosi apie 2022-ųjų Philadelphijoje vyksančią Šiaurės Amerikos lietuvių tautinių šokių šventę, o tautiniais rūbais vilkinčios merginos papasakojo, kad kai kurios iš jų yra pasipuošusios dar savo močiučių vilkėtais tautiniais kostiumais.

Norėdamas pasikalbėti su pievelėje susėdusiais Montessori mokyklėlės ,,Žiburėlis” vaikais, G. Nausėda prisėdo šalia jų ir kaip mat susipažino – mažyliai Lietuvos prezidentui mielai pasakė savo vardus.

Pasikalbėjęs su mažaisiais PLC lankytojais, pasuko prie būrelio Palaimintojo Jurgio Matulaičio misijos atstovų – kunigo Vaido Lukoševičiaus, seselių, pastoracinės tarybos narių. Kalbėdamiesi su Lietuvos vadovu, Irena ir Zigmas Vilimai, gyvenantys jau du dešimtmečius Amerikoje, prisipažino: ,,Norėtume grįžti į Lietuvą, bet kad mūsų vaikai čia”… Misijos Sutvirtinimo sakramento vadovė Grasilda Reinys Lietuvos prezidentui įteikė savo neseniai išleistą knygą apie tikėjimo kankinę Adelę Dirsytę.

Prezidentui – gyva daina ,,Tarp dviejų krantų”

,,Aš jau esu čia buvęs” – žengdamas į Pasaulio lietuvių centro pastatą, ištarė G. Nausėda. Vestibiulyje prie Palaimintojo Jurgio Matulaičio misijos sustojusiems svečiams centro vadovė E. Rėklaitis trumpai papasakojo šio pastato istoriją. Pastatytas 1964 metais, jis tarnavo kaip religinės paskirties pastatas – jame apsigyveno vienuoliai. 1987 metais šį didžiulį, 150 tūkstančių pėdų ploto pastatą nupirko lietuviai. Jie norėjo, kad po vienu stogu galėtų įsikurti įvairios mūsų tautiečių organizacijos, meno ir sporto kolektyvai, kad būtų daugiau vietos visiems rinktis į būrį ir kartu švęsti šventes. Milžiniško pastato išlaikymas per metus kainuoja 1 mln. dol., kuriuos administracijos bei dosnių lietuvių pastangomis paprastai pavyksta surinkti. ,,Kol kas nesame iš Lietuvos paprašę nė dolerio” – sakė E. Rėklaitis.

Centre nuomojamoje misijos bažnyčioje vokalistai Agnė Giedraitytė ir Martynas Matutis svečiams padainavo JAV Lietuvių Bendruomenės 70-mečio koncerte pirmą kartą skambėjusią dainą ,,Tarp dviejų krantų”. Po to misijos administratorė Birutė O’Brien susirinkusius supažindino su misijos istorija. Ji papasakojo, kad apie 1980 metus, kai į Lemontą iš kitų Čikagos priemiesčių ėmė kraustytis vis daugiau lietuvių, mūsų tautiečiai norėjo melstis kartu. Pradžioje misija PLC pastate išsinuomojo bažnyčiai patalpas trejiems metams, bet ta nuoma vis tęsiama ir misija gyvuoja jau daugiau nei 30 metų.

Bažnyčioje, kaip ir visur, kur apsilankė prezidentas G. Nausėda su pirmąja ponia, žmonės norėjo nors trumpai pasikalbėti ir nusifotografuoti atminčiai su dabartiniu Lietuvos vadovu.

Palinkėjimas ant sienos – išlikti lietuviais

Iš misijos svečiai buvo pakviesti į ekskursiją po PLC. Jie apsilankė Lietuvių Fondo raštinę, kur trumpai apie LF veiklą papasakojo jo valdybos pirmininkė Milda Davis ir administratorė Jūratė Mereckienė. G. Nausėda atsisveikindamas palinkėjo ir toliau taupiai ir protingai naudoti LF pinigus.

Didžiausią už Lietuvos ribų veikiančią – Maironio lituanistinę mokyklą svečiams pristatė jos direktorė Goda Misiūnienė. Ji papasakojo, kad ši mokymo įstaiga gyvuoja jau 62 -jus metus ir dirba dviem pamainomis – penktadienio vakarais ir šeštadieniais. Ekskursijos metu keliaujant iš klasės į klasę siaurais vingiuotais mokyklos koridoriais, prezidento apsaugos darbuotojams teko tikrinti kiekvieną posūkį: ar tikrai čia yra saugu svarbiausiam Lietuvos vadovui? Svečiai įsitikino, kad šiose įvairaus dydžio klasėse saugu ir smagu lietuviukams moksleiviams, o juos moko tikrai atsidavusios pedagogės.

Dar viena svečių stotelė – PLC įsikūręs Lietuvių dailės muziejus ir galerija ,,Siela”. Prezidentą G. Nausėdą ir pirmąją ponią pasitiko šios galerijos šeimininkė Asta Zimkus. Ji papasakojo apie neseniai gautą auką – garsios išeivijos lietuvių menininkės keramikės Eleonoros Marčiulionienės  (1912 – 2001) sukurtus du angelus, kurie dabar eksponuojami galerijoje. Pirmajai Lietuvos porai buvo įteikta dovana – Čikagoje kuriančios stiklo menininkės Agnės Sabonis sukurtą angelą. A. Zimkus papasakojo apie tai, kaip šalia Lietuvių dailės muziejaus entuziastų pastangomis buvo įkurta ,,Sielos” galerija ir kiek šios vietos kūrėjai jai atidavė savo laiko, o svarbiausia – meilės, įgyvendindami savo idėją. Šiuo metu galerijoje veikia nauja jauno išeivijos dailininko Rolando Dabruko darbų paroda.

Prieš atvykstant prezidentui, galerijoje atsirado dar vienas nuostabus kūrinys – milžiniško dydžio iš aukso spalvos šiaudelių suvertas sodas. Jo autoriai – iš Detroito atvykę Vilija ir Paulius Jurgučiai bei keturi jų vaikai – dvylikametė Sigita, 10-ties Darius, devynmetė Neringa ir jauniausioji, šešerių sulaukusi dukrytė.

,,Sieloje” tikrai netrūksta kūrybiško veiksmo – tuo įsitikino Lietuvos vadovas ir pirmoji ponia: patyrusios audėjos rodė, kaip jos audžia juostas, kūrybinėse dirbtuvėse svečius pasveikino grupė čia dirbančių dailės mokytojų, tautodailės medžio darbų ekspozicija atskleidė talentingų autorių vardus. O prie svečių knyga tapusios baltos galerijos sienos pakviesta pirmoji Lietuvos pora taip pat buvo paprašyta čia palikti savo įrašą. Pajutęs ne tik PLC, bet ir kitose aplankytose Čikagos lietuvybės taškuose tvyrančią dvasią, G. Nausėda parašė palinkėjimą: ,,Išlikti lietuviu visur ir visada”.

Čikagoje – lietuvybės energijos užtaisas

Į Banys šeimos salę, kurioje turėjo įvykti svečių susitikimas su visuomene, gerokai prieš prasidedant renginiui, ėmė rinktis žmonės. Prisirinko pilna salė, norinčių pasiklausyti G. Nausėdos minčių. Ant pakylos centro vadovė E. Rėklaitis pakvietė LR prezidentą, pirmąją ponią ir LR ambasadorę JAV  Audrą Plepytę, generalinę konsulę Čikagoje Sigridą Mulevičienę. Pasisveikinusi su susirinkusiais, D. Nausėdienė išėjo į ,,Sielos” galerijoje vykusį susitikimą su čia veikiančių lietuvių moterų labdaros organizacijų atstovėmis bei MLM mokytojomis.

Salėje likusiems svečiams ir susirinkusiems klausytojams apie JAV LB veiklą pasakojo šios organizacijos Krašto valdybos vicepirmininkė Daina Miežlaiškis. Pakviestas tarti žodį. G. Nausėda pirmiausiai pasakė supratęs, kokią didelę klaidą būtų padaręs, jeigu iš karto po vizito New Yorke būtų keliavęs į Lietuvą ir neužsukęs į Čikagą. Tai, kokioje lietuvybės saloje atsidūrė, pamatė lankydamas ,,lietuviškuosius taškus”. Jis sakė per tas dienas, bendraudamas su čia gyvenančiais ir Lietuvą mylinčiais tautiečiais pats ,,pasikrovė” geros energijos ir jautėsi taip, tarsi būtų Lietuvoje. ,,Mūsų širdys svarbesnės negu technologijos”, – sakė prezidentas. Jo teigimu, tik širdys gali į stiprų kumštį sujungti visame pasaulyje išsibarsčiusius lietuvius. Tai ir yra ta paslaptis, atsakymas į klausimą, kaip tokia maža,  tik 3 milijonus žmonių turinti tauta, daro darbus, kurie stebina visą pasaulį.

Lietuvos vadovas atsakė į salės klausimus apie vienybės nebuvimą Seime, apie skiepus ir galimybių pasų supriešintus Lietuvos gyventojus, apie naują referendumą dėl pilietybės. Šypseną sukėlė ir mažųjų klausytojų pasmalsavimas: kas labiausiai patinka prezidento darbe? ,,Dalyvauti tokiuose susitikimuose, kaip šis”, – net nesusimąstęs atsakė G. Nausėda.

Kiek žingsnių padarė svečiai, ekskursijos po PLC metu? Kiek kartų pirmoji pora stojo fotografuotis su žmonėmis, panorusiais įsiamžinti su jais atminimui? To ir nebūtų įmanoma suskaičiuoti, bet juk geros emocijos teikia energijos. Todėl ir pasibaigus šiam susitikimui su visuomene, svečių energija dar nebuvo išsekusi. Jie apsilankė krepšinio salėje, kur Čikagos Lietuvos krepšinio lygos (ČLKL) prezidentas Aurimas Matulevičius papasakojo apie sportininkų veiklą, pristatė jaunuosius sportininkus, ir, žinoma, nepraleido progos įsitikinti, ar aukštaūgis  krepšinio šalies Lietuvos vadovas moka valdyti krepšinio kamuolį.

LR prezidentas ir pirmoji ponia po vakarienės tiesiai iš Lemonto išvyko į oro uostą ir tą patį vakarą išskrido į Lietuvą.

The President of the Republic of Lithuania Visits the Heart of Chicagoland’s Lithuanians – the Lithuanian World Center

On September 24, 2021, the last day of his visit to the United States, the President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė visited the Lithuanian World Center (LWC) in Lemont, Illinois. The President was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the USA Audra Plepytė, the Consul General of the Republic of Lithuania in Chicago Sigrida Mulevičienė and a group of advisers, assistants and communication specialists.

The President and First Lady were greeted by LWC Executive Director Elena Rėklaitis, Chairman of the Board Jurgis Riškus, and President Linas Gylys. Paula Juzėnas and Alex O’Brien presented flowers to the VIP guests, impressing them with their flawless delivery of words of welcome in the Lithuanian language.

The First Couple paid tribute at the monument to Lithuanian partisan commander Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas and then interacted with the people gathered on the lawn for some time before turning inside the PLC building. They talked to Spindulys and Suktinis folk dancers about the upcoming 2022 North American Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival in Philadelphia, and the women wearing national costumes said that some of them were wearing national costumes once worn by their grandmothers.

In order to talk to the children of the Montessori school “Žiburėlis” at their level, G. Nausėda sat next to them right on the ground.  What a sweet and special moment.

After spending time with the little ones, G. Nausėda turned to a group of representatives from the Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Mission:  Fr. Vaidas Lukoševičius, Sr. Judita and Sr. Laimutė, along with members of the pastoral council. Speaking to the Lithuanian leader, Irena and Zigmas Vilimas, who have been living in America for two decades, admitted: “We would like to return to Lithuania, but our children are here”.  Grasilda Reinys presented the President with her recently published book about Adelė Dirsytė.

“I have been here before,” reminisced G. Nausėda, entering the building of the Lithuanian World Center. E. Rėklaitis made a brief presentation to the special guests about the Center.  Built in 1964, it served as a religious building for monks. In 1987, this huge building, over 150,000 sq. ft, was bought by Lithuanians. Their goal was to house various organizations from their community under one roof, in order to preserve and promote Lithuanian culture and heritage.  Maintaining such a large building costs $ 1 million a year.  “So far, we have managed to raise those funds without asking a dollar of support from the government of Lithuania, and we are proud to be its biggest ambassadors outside of Lithuania,” said E. Rėklaitis.

The guests were invited to take a seat in the church to listen to vocalists Agnė Giedraitytė and Martynas Matutis who sang the song, “Between Two Shores”, which was performed for the first time during the 70th anniversary celebration of Lithuanian American Community, Inc.  Afterwards, Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Mission (BJMM) Administrator Birutė O’Brien introduced the history of the mission. She said that around 1980, when more and more Lithuanians started moving to Lemont from the city and other suburbs of Chicago, our community members desired a place to pray together. BJMM has been in existence for more than 30 years.

After the moving concert and presentation, the guests were invited on a tour of the PLC. They visited the office of the Lithuanian Foundation, where Milda Davis, Chairman of the Board, and Jūratė Mereckienė, Executive Director, spoke briefly about the activities of the Lithuanian Foundation. In saying goodbye, G. Nausėda wished all the best to the Foundation, advising them to continue to use their resources wisely so that they could support many individuals and organizations for years to come.

The largest Lithuanian school operating outside of Lithuania, Maironis Lithuanian School, was presented to the guests by its director Goda Misiūnienė. She said the school has been around for 62 years and operates on Friday evenings and Saturdays. During the tour, traveling from class to class through the narrow winding school corridors, the President’s security guards had to check every turn, assuring safe passage for such important visitors.

Descending down the stairs of the large building, the group entered the Lithuanian Art Museum and Gallery Siela. President G. Nausėdas and First Lady were greeted by the curator of this gallery, Asta Zimkus.  She told about a recent donation: two ceramic angels created by the famous Lithuanian emigrant artist ceramicist Eleonora Marčiulionienė (1912 – 2001), which are now exhibited in the gallery. Then the First Couple was presented with a gift – an angel created by Chicago-based glass artist Agnė Sabonis. A. Zimkus told about how the Soul Gallery was established within the Lithuanian Art Museum with the efforts of art enthusiasts, and described how passionately the volunteers gave of their time, and most importantly – their love, in implementing their ideas. A new exhibition of works by the young diaspora artist Rolandas Dabrukas was on display in the gallery.

Before the President arrived, another wonderful work appeared in the gallery – a giant ornament made of golden straw. Its creators were Vilija and Paulius Jurgutis from Detroit and their four children – twelve-year-old Sigita, 10-year-old Darius, nine-year-old Neringa and the youngest daughter.  They made the special trip from Michigan to participate in this special event.

There is certainly no shortage of creative action in the museum.  This was confirmed by the activity witnessed that day: experienced weavers demonstrated their art on authentic looms, a group of art teachers were actively preparing materials for an upcoming art class, and a permanent display of wood carvings awed the tourists. A. Zimkus invited the President and First Lady to leave a written record of their visit on w special white wall, which has become a sort of VIP guest book.  Feeling the spirit prevailing not only at the LWC, but also in other Lithuanian places visited in the Chicago area, G. Nausėda wrote a wish: “Remain Lithuanian everywhere and always”.

Separate from the tour, many people from the Lithuanian community began to gather in the Banys Family Hall, awaiting a “Meet and Greet” event with the President and First Lady.  After a brief rest, the special guests were welcomed by enthusiastic applause as they made their way to the risers.   Executive Director E. Rėklaitis introduced the President of the Republic of Lithuania, First Lady Diana, along with the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the USA Audra Plepytė and the Consul General in Chicago Sigrida Mulevičienė.

Daina Miežlaiškis, Vice-Chairman of the National Board of the Lithuanian American Community, Inc., presented the many accomplishments of LAC and thanked President G. Nausėda for visiting.

G. Nausėda stepped up to the microphone and stated what a big mistake he would have made if he had chosen to return to Lithuania immediately after his visit to New York instead of stopping to visit Chicago and Lemont. He was impressed by this “island” of Lithuanians during his visit to each of the individual points of interest in the area.  He continued to say that he felt “recharged” by the good energy shared with him during his discussions with Lithuanians living in the area.  He said that he truly felt at home, like he were in Lithuania. “Our hearts are more important than technology,” the President said. According to him, only hearts can unite Lithuanians scattered all over the world into a strong fist. This is the secret, the answer to the question of how such a small nation with only 3 million people does work that amazes the whole world.

First Lady D. Nausėdienė warmly greeted the gathered public and then excused herself so that she could meet with representatives of a variety of Lithuanian charities, as well as with teachers from the Maironis Lithuanian School.

President Nausėda then took the opportunity to answer questions from those in attendance.  Topics ranged from the lack of unity in Seimas, to Covid vaccinations and vaccine passports, to a new referendum on citizenship. One of the youngest audience members caused everyone to smile when he asked, “What do you like most about your work as President”?  “I mostly enjoy participating in meetings like this,” G. Nausėda replied, without missing a beat.

How many hundreds of steps did the guests take during the PLC tour? How many times did the First Couple stop to take photos with people who wanted to immortalize this event? Maybe impossible to count, but fatigue was averted because an abundance of energy was created by all of the positive emotions of the day.  Buoyed by that good energy, the VIP guests descended to R. Riškus Hall and were met by crowds of children athletes.  There, the President of the Chicago Lithuanian Basketball League (ČLKL) Aurimas Matulevičius and other coaches presented their organizations to the visitors.  After the President made a few basketball shots and tried his hand at pickleball, he patiently signed numerous basketballs, shirts, and shoes for the excited kids and adults.

After dinner, the President of the Republic of Lithuania and the First Lady, along with the rest of the entourage, left the airport directly from Lemont and flew to Lithuania the same evening.  What an honor to have spent an afternoon with such special guests!

LWC PART-TIME POSITION:  BUILDING MAINTENANCE

Perform such duties, including, but not limited to, the following:

• During morning shift, unlock building doors at 7:00am; during evening shift, lock building doors at 10pm. Inspect all areas of the building and grounds during each shift to assure that they are clean and outfitted with proper supplies.  This includes, but is not limited to, all hallways, classrooms, toilets, halls, gyms and kitchens, as well entrances and exits to the building, grounds, garage, etc.
• Set up tables, chairs, classrooms etc. as specified by administrative staff.
• Unlock specific rooms for scheduled events; lock them afterwards.
• Assist customers before and during events.
• Clean kitchen utensils and equipment; wash dishes, pots, pans etc. after events.
• Perform preventive maintenance as directed.
• Perform any other duties as directed to assure that the facilities are in good order to meet our customers’ needs.
• Inform the Administrator on an ongoing basis in respect to status of the facilities and special needs, if any.
• Periodically check and clean all roof drains and water run-offs to prevent water leaks.
• Maintain inventory of janitorial supplies, linens, utensils, dishes, and other miscellaneous items; identify items to be reordered and communicate that information to the administration.
• Be able to lift 50 pounds of weight.
• Must speak basic Lithuanian and English.
• Includes weekend and night shifts, up to 25 hours/week.
• Must show documentation to prove authorization to legally live and work in the U.S.

We are relieved that the pandemic restrictions are starting to loosen up.  Revenue losses from last year and the first half of this year have caused us great difficulty in funding some critical projects that we can no longer put off:  the 4th phase of our Fire Prevention Sprinkler System installation and Asphalt Repair of our roadways.  So we are moving forward on these and other projects, and are asking for your financial support.

Thanks to all of the brave souls who supported the Lithuanian World Center’s first Fall Harvest Fest, held outdoors on Sunday, October 18, 2020.  The chilly temperatures and rainy downpour didn’t stop our participants from coming out with a positive vibe, making the best of a potentially miserable situation.  Vendors reported tremendous success; volunteers felt fulfilled and appreciated; and our guests left wanting more.  We thank you all!

Because of the safety guidelines that prohibit large gatherings indoors, our Holiday Craft Fair, usually held indoors on the first weekend in December, has been cancelled.  Stay tuned for information on future outdoor fairs.  In 2021, we plan on hosting several outdoor fairs: a Spring Fair on Sunday, May 16; a Summer Fest on Sunday, July 18; and a Fall Harvest Fest on Sunday, September 19.  If indoor gatherings will be allowed, we will also host our annual Holiday Craft Fair next year on Saturday, December 4, and Sunday, December 5.

We sadly announce the resignation of our beloved Executive Director, Artūras Žilys, who has worked tirelessly to elevate our Lithuanian World Center to its current impressive state.  Under his guidance, the Center has dramatically improved its financial strength, completed over $1.5 MM in capital improvement projects, and increased the number of organizations which use our facilities from 25 to 40!  We will be forever grateful for his leadership and skill, and wish him the best as he moves on to his next adventure.

At the same time, we congratulate Elena (Elytė) Rėklaitis for her promotion to the Executive Director position, effective June 29, 2020.  For 23 years, she has been active at the Center as a volunteer, the founder and director of Pipirų Ratelis, and as the mother of 4 sons who attended Maironis Lithuanian School, Lituanica basketball, Lituanica boy scouts, and Spindulys Folk Dance Ensemble.  For the last 8 years, she worked at the LWC as their Events & Special Projects Manager.

Pranešame, kad 12 metų Pasaulio Lietuvių Centrui vadovavęs Artūras Žilys palieka Vykdomojo Direktoriaus pareigas nuo š.m. birželio 26 d.  A.  Žilys buvo ypatingai pasišventęs ir atsidavęs PLC veiklai, todėl jam buvo labai sunku priimti šį sprendimą. Artimoje ateityje jis planuoja praleisti daugiau laiko Lietuvoje su asmeniniais projektais.

Per dvylika A. Žilio vadovavimo metų, organizacijos finansinė padėtis buvo pagerinta 800 % . Per tą laikotarpį, jam organizuojant ir prižiūrint, buvo įvykdyta virš 1,5 milijono dolerių vertės kapitalinių pastatų komplekso atnaujinimo ir pagerinimo projektų, tokių kaip ekonomiškos ir ekologiškos apšvietimo sistemos įvedimas, priešgaisrinės apsaugos sistemos instaliacija, naujų aukšto efektyvumo pastato ir vandens šildymo sistemų įvedimas, bažnyčios sienų remontas bei bažnyčios fasadinės sienos seno, surudyjusio kryžiaus pakeitimas, taip pat daugelis stogų, grindų, salių atnaujinimo ir kitų projektų.  A. Žilys labai sėkmingai vadovavo PLC komandai. Jo patarimų vedama PLC taryba ir valdyba pakėlė šią organizaciją į aukštesnį, profesionalų lygį. Šiai dienai PLC yra finansiškai stipri, stabili, efektyvi ir nuolatos tobulėjanti organizacija.

Mes pasiilgsime Artūro, bet jo darbai ir indėlis į PLC veiklą niekada nebus pamiršti.

Tarybos ir valdybos sprendimu, Elena (Elytė) Rėklaitis buvo paskirta užimti PLC Vykdomojo direktoriaus pareigas nuo š.m. birželio 29 d.  E. Rėklaitis paskutinius 8 metus dirbo PLC renginių ir specialių projektų vadove. Elena yra baigusi University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign ir įgijusi politinių mokslų bakalauro laipsnį, bei University of Chicago, kur įgijo verslo administravimo magistro laipsnį.

Elena yra dirbusi Kraft Foods kompanijoje Įvaizdžio kūrimo vadybininke. Ji užaugino 4 sūnus, kurie lankė Maironio lituanistinę mokyklą, buvo aktyvūs Lietuvių skautų, Lituanica krepšinio mokyklos ir Spindulio tautinių šokių grupės nariai.

Pasaulio lietuvių centras yra didžiausias išeivijoje lietuvių bendruomeninis ir kultūrinis centras. PLC buvo įkurtas 1987 m., kaip ne pelno siekianti organizacija, kurios misija yra išsaugoti ir puoselėti lietuvių kultūrinį paveldą ir tradicijas. Centre bendruomenė gali susipažinti su lietuvių kultūra, papročiais, tradicijomis ir istorija. PLC organizuoja ir remia mokslo, kultūrines, socialines, dvasines, sporto ir kitas programas. Šiuo metu PLC yra namai daugiau nei 40 – čiai lietuviškų organizacijų. Per metus centrą aplanko virš 200,000 lankytojų.

Džiaugiuosi, kad turėjau galimybę artimai dirbti su Artūru pastaruosius 12 metų. Jis yra pasišventęs, sąžiningas, išradingas, draugiškas, sunkaus darbo nebijantis vadovas. Mums tikrai trūks jo centre. Tačiau tikiu, kad Elena yra puiki kandidatė perimti Arturo pareigas. Ji nemažai metų dirbo kartu su Artūru ir žino visus centro veiklos niuansus. Todėl žiūriu į ateitį su viltimi ir pasitikėjimu.

Pokyčiai Pasaulio lietuvių centre

Pokyčiai, nuolatiniai pokyčiai, neišvengiami pokyčiai šiandien valdo visuomenę. Joks sprendimas negali būti priimtas neatsižvelgus į pasaulį, koks jis yra dabar, bet ir į tokį, koks jis bus rytoj. (Issaac Asimov)

Pokyčiai daugeliui nebūna lengvi. Ypač jei tie pokyčiai netikėti.  Tai reiškia atitrūkimą nuo įprasto ritmo, išėjimą iš komforto zonos, naujus tikslus ir naujas priemones jiems pasiekti. Dažnai pirma reakcija būna sumaištis ir baimė. Tačiau suvokiame, kad be pokyčių sustoja progresas. Viskas aplink keičiasi. Galime trepsėti kojomis ir pasiduoti arba galime tai matyti kaip galimybę tobulėti.

Pokyčiai atėjo ir į Pasaulio lietuvių centrą. Daugeliui netikėti, bet žmogiškai suprantami. Beveik 12 metų Pasaulio lietuvių centrui vadovavęs Artūras Žilys palieka vykdomojo direktoriaus pareigas.

Dirbdami kartu tapome viena didele šeima. Kiekvienas pažįstame vienas kito būdą, stipriasias vietas, mokame išklausyti, suprasti, įsijausti. Gal todėl ši komanda ir yra tokia darni. Kartu su PLC Valdybos pirmininku Linu Gyliu, Artūras atnešė į PLC daugybę permainų: jie sudarė stiprią PLC Tarybą ir Valdybą sujungdami būrį atsakingų bendruomenės narių, savo sričių profesionalų, kurie nuolatos kiekvienas savaip prisideda prie Centro veiklos, projektų ir sprendimų. Per pastarąjį dešimtmetį po PLC stogu įsikūrė 20  papildomų lietuviškų organizacijų, kurių dabar turime net 40. Užmegsta daugybė Centrui palankių ryšių, pasirašyta nemažai bendradarbiavimo sutarčių, įvykdyta daugybė svarbių projektų. Kiekvienas pastatų komplekso kampelis buvo atnaujintas, centro finansinė padėtis labai sustiprinta ir sutvarkyti visi administraciniai ir valdymo procesai. Artūrui vadovaujant centro veikla atgijo ir pakilo į profesionalų ir daug aukštesnį lygį. Kažkaip labai simboliškai paskutiniu Artūro vadovaujamu projektu tapo naujas kryžius, vos prieš keletą dienų pakabintas virš įėjimo į bažnyčią. Nežinau kito žmogaus, kuris geriau žinotų kiekvieną dokumentą, sutartį, kiekvieną pastato kampelį, kiekvieną varžtelį. Tai žmogus, kuris gyveno Centru ir, tikiu, kad ilgai dar juo gyvens.

Tačiau neverta gąsdintis, juk Artūras savo pareigas perduoda žmogui su puikia patirtimi ir žiniomis, o svarbiausia didžiule meile šiai organizacijai. Tai žmogus, kuris jau daugiau nei 8 metus yra šios komandos dalimi ir kuriam po truputį buvo patikima vis rimtesni, didesni darbai ir atsakomybės, natūraliai priartinant prie šios dienos sprendimo ir centro veiklos tęstinumo. Iš visos širdies sveikiname savo mielą kolegę Elytę Rėklaitis, perėmusią Pasaulio lietuvių centro vairą į savo rankas. Turbūt nebūtų galima įsivaizduoti labiau tinkamo žmogaus šioms pareigoms, ypač šiuo metu. Esame pasiruošę tęsti pradėtus darbus ir imtis naujų.

Pasaulio lietuvių centro tikslai nesikeičia, keisis tik kelias į juos. Keturis berniukus užauginusi Elytė, be jokios abejonės puikiai susitvarkys su naujomis pareigomis. Žinau, kad ji bus visad pirmoji, atsiraitojusi rankoves ir visa galva pasinėrusi į darbą.

Abiems mūsų mylimiems vadovams  linkime didžiausios sėkmės, palaikome jus abu visapusiškai visuose jūsų sprendimuose. Artūrai, tavęs pasiilgsime. Buvai mūsų šaltas dušas, kai per daug įsijausdavome, buvai mūsų šviesus protas, pasveriantis visus už ir prieš bet kokioje naujoje užduotyje. Buvai vadovas su centro veiklos ir plėtros vizija, naujų idėjų ir projektų kurėjas. Dėkoju už leidimą svajoti, kurti ir už tavo atvirumą visoms idėjoms. Dabar tu būsi mūsų tiltas su Lietuva -tavo vizija ir tavo užmegsti ryšiai žada glaudžius ryšius su Lietuvos miestais ir įvairiausiomis Lietuvos organizacijomis. Tu visada būsi mūsų patarėjas ir visada liksi mūsų brangus draugas. Elyte, pasimatysime pirmadienį, žinau, kad jau ruoši darbų sąrašą…

PLC laivas plaukia ir per pandemijos audrą

The health and safety of our community members, condo residents and employees is of key importance to the Lithuanian World Center.  We are committed to help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 and therefore, are taking precautionary measures in keeping everyone safe.  

Effective  3/19/2020:

1) The Lithuanian World Center is closing its doors to visitors (all access doors will be locked).  All events, rehearsals and other functions are cancelled or postponed until further notice (contact each individual organization to learn more information).

 2) Entry to the building is limited.  Call 630-257-8787 if you have any questions, or want permission to enter the Center.  Only under specific circumstances will users of our facility be allowed to access the building. 

3) Condo residents will have normal access to their units only through the condo entrance on the north side of the building.  Residents are asked to limit their activities to the condo wing, and to limit the number of visitors to their units. 

4) We will have 2 bins outside of the church entrance, 1 for outgoing mail and packages, and 1 for incoming mail, donations, payments and packages.  Our staff will monitor these bins daily.

We encourage you to follow personal health and safety recommendations to protect yourself and your family members during this time.  We appreciate your patience and compassion as we do our best to keep our population safe.

On May 29th, representatives from the LWC (President Linas Gylys, Executive Director Artūras Žilys, and Special Projects Manager Elytė Rėklaitis) participated in a meeting at the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie, Illinois. Also in attendance was the Illinois Holocaust Museum Public Programs Director Lillian Polus Gerstner, Cultural Affairs and Public Diplomacy Representative from the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in Chicago Ieva Dilytė, Jerry Zoloto, President of Litvak World, and Stacy Rosenthal, Board Member of Litvak World. The group brainstormed how best to commemorate the Year of the Vilna Gaon and the History of Jews in Lithuania (2020), which was announced by the Lithuanian Parliament last year. The LWC looks forward to working with this group to organize some celebratory events.

A recent article by Virginija Petrauskienė, published in the March 30, 2019, issue of “Draugas” (Vol. CX  Nr. 37), highlights the efforts and accomplishments over the last ten years of the Lithuanian World Center’s Executive Director, Artūras Žilys, its President, Linas Gylys, its Board, Executive Committee, our staff and volunteers.

“Apie PLC priežiūrą — su meile”

Lankydamiesi Pasaulio lietuvių centre, esančiame Lemonte, visada pasidžiaugiame didingu pastatu ir jame esančiomis tvarkingomis ir su meile prižiūrimomis erdvėmis – salėmis, kabinetais, koridoriais, kuriuose smagu nuolat sutikti įvairaus amžiaus žmonių, girdėti lietuvišką kalbą.

Tačiau retas iš mūsų žino įdomius skaičius, susijusius su šiuo lietuvybės židiniu. Štai keli iš jų:

Pasaulio lietuvių centro vidaus patalpų plotas – 150 tūkstančių kvadratinių pėdų, jo kiemo teritorija užima 18 akrų žemės plotą. Kasmet centre apsilanko per 200 tūkstančių žmonių. Pastato išlaikymas kainuoja 1 milijoną dolerių per metus.

Ateidami į nuolat PLC vykstančius įvairius renginius, nedažnai susimąstome apie tai, kas ir už kokiu būdu gaunamus pinigus rūpinasi pastato tvarka, remontu, šildymu, priežiūra ir kitais buitiniais reikalais?

Apie tai – pokalbis su PLC direktoriumi Artūru Žiliu ir savanoriškai, be piniginio atlygio dirbančiu PLC valdybos pirmininku Linu Gyliu. Šis vyrų tandemas, padedamas PLC tarybos ir valdybos savanoriškai dirbančių narių, jau vienuoliktus metus darniai darbuojasi, vadovaudami centrui. Neseniai vykusiame PLC narių susirinkime jie pateikė ataskaitą, ką pavyko centre padaryti per pastaruosius 10 metų. Darbai iš tiesų įspūdingi, nors L. Gylys prisipažino: ,,Ne vieną kartą norėjosi uždaryti duris ir viską mesti.” Tačiau abu vadovai sėkmingai pradėjo jau antrąjį savo darbo centre dešimtmetį – laukia nauji darbai, įsipareigojimai ir planai.

Kokiais keliais atsiradote PLC ir užėmėte šias pareigas?

L.G. Praėjusių metų kovą sukako dešimt metų, kaip esu PLC valdybos pirmininkas. Prieš atsirasdamas valdyboje, 33 metus dirbau University of Illinois patologijos departamento administratoriumi. Kai išėjau į pensiją, tuomet mane ir įtraukė. Tuometinis PLC tarybos pirmininkas Paulius Majauskas sakė: ,,ateik padirbėti, tu turi puikią patirtį”. Šis darbas yra nelengvas, o už jį niekas nemoka. Todėl nelabai kas ir nori jį dirbti. Bet aš jaučiu pareigą savo darbu atsidėkoti PLC už tai, ką iš jo gavau. Čia mokėsi mano keturi vaikai, dabar mokosi anūkai. Mano žmona buvo pirmoji centro administratorė. Pradžioje manęs prašė padirbėti nors dvejus metus. Bet taip atsitiko, kad dirbu jau vienuoliktus. Man patinka dirbti su Artūru, nes abu sutariame, panašiai viską vertiname, mokame priimti bendrą sprendimą, jeigu reikia, surasti kompromisą. Ir mūsų taryba gražiai dirba.

A.Ž. Mane taip pat pakvietė tuometinis PLC tarybos pirmininkas P. Majauskas. Pirmiausiai jis prikalbino Liną, paskui ir mane, nes tikėjosi, kad mes galėsime pakeisti tuo metu centre susidariusią nepavydėtiną situaciją. Aš Lietuvoje buvau baigęs ekonomikos ir vadybos magistrantūrą. O 2003 metais atvykęs į Ameriką, dar studijavau MBA ir įgijau verslo administravimo magistro laipsnį. Amerikoje kurį laiką dirbau vadybininku vienoje logistikos kompanijoje, taip pat amerikiečių mokykloje instruktoriumi. Pradžioje mane  taip pat  prikalbino padirbėti nors kelerius metus, kad centro užstrigę reikalai pajudėtų į priekį. Bet kai ateini ir pamatai, kad tai, ką darai, ima sektis, tas labai įkvepia. O dar įkvepia, kai pamatai, kiek čia žmonių dirba savanoriškai, be atlygio ir kiek tas Centras daug duoda lietuvybės puoselėjimui ir išlaikymui. Turime tikrai didžiuotis ir buti dėkingi turėdami patį didžiausią lietuvių centrą už Lietuvos ribų. Per tuos 10 metų mums teko priimti daug atsakingų, sunkių finansinių sprendimų, kurie lemia centro ateitį. 

Kokia tuomet buvo ta PLC situacija? Nuo ko pradėjote darbus? 

A. Ž. Prieš 10 metų PLC situacija buvo labai sudėtinga. tiek finansine, tiek organizacine prasme. Dar tuo metu prasidėjo ir ekonominė krizė. Visas vakarinis pastato sparnas buvo tuščias, nenuomojamas. Rytiniame sparne patalpas naudojusi amerikiečių mokykla išsikraustė. Per visą vasarą centro salėse įvyko vos trys renginiai (dabar tiek renginių būna per vieną savaitgalį). PLC banko sąskaitose buvo tik 60 tūkstančių dolerių, pinigų galėjo pritrūkti net darbuotojų atlyginimams nes pastate skubiai reikėjo daug ką remontuoti. Pradėjome nuo to, kad susėdome tarybos posėdyje ir ėmėme svarstyti, ką pirmiausia daryti. Pradėjome nuo nedidelės paskolos. Kreipėmės į PLC narius, prašydami paskolinti pinigų be procentų (ir dabar tą praktiką taikome, o paskolinusieji gali nurašyti 10 procentų paskolintos sumos dydžio nuo metinių mokesčių). Žmonės suskolino mums apie 60 tūkstančių dolerių. Tai buvo nebloga pagalba – galėjome pradėti būtiniausius remontus.

L. G. Pradžioje į susirinkimus ateidavo daug žmonių, nes buvo daug nepatenkintų, daugelis norėjo išsakyti priekaištus. Netrūko ir tam tikrų intrigų. Tuomet susirinkimai trukdavo 4-5 valandas, ilgiausiai ginčydavomės. Aš pamenu, kaip  nenorėdavau sekmadieniais ateiti į šv. Mišias, vykstančias Lemonto bažnyčioje, nes prieš pamaldas ir po jų žmonės mane atakuodavo, klausdavo, kada bus sutvarkytas kelias, užlygintos duobės. Aš vis galvodavau, gal man reikia geriau eiti į amerikiečių bažnyčią, ten nors ramiai pasimelsiu…

A. Ž. Galvodami, kaip užsidirbti pinigų, pasitiesėme ant stalo PLC pastato planą ir pradėjome aptarinėti, kaip išnaudoti kiekvieną kambarėlį, kiekvieną kampelį. Dabar PLC pastate patalpas naudoja 38 įvairios organizacijos, įmonės. Iš jų pelno nesiekiančių – kokios 25. Visai neseniai pas mus įsikūrė ir Pasaulio lietuvių jaunimo sąjunga. Pastaruoju metu sulaukiame prašymų dėl nuolatinio patalpų naudojimo, tačiau mes jau nebeturime vietos, kur galėtume priimti naujai ateinančias organizacijas.

Kokių turite pajamų šaltinių be patalpų nuomos? Kiek etatinių darbuotojų dirba centre? 

A.Ž. Nuolatinio patalpų naudojimo mokesčiai sudaro apie 35 procentus visų gaunamų pajamų. Dar apie 35 procentus sudaro salių naudojimo įplaukos įvairiems renginiams. Iš tikslinių lėšų telkimo kokiam nors projektui renginių gauname apie 20 procentų PLC metinio biudžeto pinigų. Ir dar vienas pajamų šaltinis – geranoriškos asmenų aukos. Centre dirba aštuoni darbuotojai. Keturi iš jų atlieka įvairius pastato priežiūros, valymo ir tvarkymo darbus, o dar keturi dirba administracijoje. Vienas iš jų – tik puse etato.

Jūsų dešimties metų darbų iliustruotoje ataskaitoje parašyta, kad per 2009-2018 metus atlikta darbų už daugiau nei milijoną dolerių. Kokie svarbiausi darbai padaryti?

A.Ž. Tų darbų padaryta tikrai daug. Kartais eini ir nebepameni, kaip buvo anksčiau, jau pasimiršo. Gerai, kad turime nuotraukų, kuriose užfiksuoti ankstesni vaizdai. Pamenu, kai pradėjau dirbti, man baisiausiai atrodė tos senosios plytelės koridoriuose: ištrupėjusios, kaip kokiame negyvenamame, apleistame pastate. Kadangi jų tvirtinimo klijuose buvo asbesto, teko samdyti specialią su asbestu dirbančią įmonę, o tai gerokai pabrangino darbą. Šis buvo vienas iš pirmųjų mūsų projektų.

Vardinant darbus, būtinai reikėtų paminėti gaisro gesinimo sistemos ir vandens purkštukų įrengimą. Tai didelis, brangus tęstinis projektas, kuris turėtų būti baigtas 2022 metais. Kai pabaigėme pirmąjį darbų etapą, Lemonto miestelio ugniagesiai buvo tokie patenkinti, kad mums įteikė lietuviškai parašytą padėką. Jie specialiai ieškojo ir surado žmogų, kuris jiems tą padėką išvertė į lietuvių kalbą. Mes ir patys šiuo darbu patenkinti, nes ta vandens purkštukų sistema užtikrina didesnį pastato saugumą, kilus gaisro grėsmei. O saugumas tikrai svarbu, kai čia renkasi daug žmonių, mokykloje mokosi apie 800 vaikų. Beje, PLC yra vienas iš dviejų gausiausiai lankomų vietų Lemonto miestelyje. Su mumis lankytojų skaičiumi konkuruoja tik netoliese esanti indų šventykla.

Dar per tą laiką buvo išasfaltuotas kelias, pradedant įvažiavimu iš 127-tos gatvės, taip pat vakarinėje pastato dalyje esančioje automobilių stovėjimo aikštelė, apvažiavimas aplink kryžių kalnelį. Įdiegta pastato stebėjimo sistema, nupirktos naujos kėdės, išklota nauja kiliminė danga Banio šeimos salėje, biuruose ir vakarinės pastato dalies koridoriuose, pakeista dalies pastato stogo danga. Atskiras pasakojimas – apie suskilinėjusias bažnyčios sienas, kurios ėmė kelti pavojų žmonėms. Vieni meistrai paprašė milijono už vienos sienos sutvirtinimą. Tačiau pavyko surasti kompaniją, kuriai vadovauja labai religingas žmogus. Jis sutiko bažnyčią tvarkyti už protingą kainą ir tą darbą padarė labai kokybiškai.

Taip pat labai svarbus projektas – viso pastato vidaus ir lauko apšvietimo pakeitimas nauja LED švietimo sistema. Tas padėjo ne tik pagerinti apšvietimą, bet ir padeda sutaupyti daug pinigų mokant sąskaitas už elektrą. 

L. G. Vienas žmogus paaukojo pinigų tam, kad būtų suremontuoti visi keturiolika PLC esančių tualetų. Iš tiesų šventėms sales nuomojantys žmonės būdavo nepatenkinti, sakydavo, kad viskas būtų puiku, jeigu ne tie nesutvarkyti tualetai. Dabar šis darbas jau beveik užbaigtas. Liko suremontuoti du, tą padarysime šiais metais.

Visko neišvardinsi, bet ypač norisi pasidžiaugti, kad pavyko pakeisti senąją pastato šildymo sistemą.

Juk šiam darbui buvo paskelbta speciali pinigų rinkliava? 

L. G. Taip, žmonės aukojo nemažai. Pastebėjome, kad jeigu yra konkretus projektas, tuomet jam žmonės aukoja. Konkretus projektas turi konkrečius rezultatus. Mes esame organizacija, kuri rūpinasi pastatu, jo išlaikymu ir jo būklės gerinimu. Dažnas, paklaustas ar remia centrą, sako, kad jau paaukojo PLC, o pasigilinus supranti, kad žmogus paaukojo bažnyčiai, arba sumokėjo mokslapinigius mokyklai, arba parėmė dar kurią nors centre esančią organizaciją. Labai tuo džiaugiamės. Tai padeda organizacijoms dalinai padengti patalpų naudojimo mokesčius ir savo išlaidas. Yra svarbu suprasti, kad kiekviena PLC įsikūrusi organizacija yra atskiras vienetas, kuriems visiems reikia išsilaikyti, kaip ir pačiam PLC. Galime sakyti, kad išsilaikymui mes užsidirbame, tačiau bet kokia renovacija, planinis ar skubus remontas reikalauja papildomų išlaidų, kurias galime padengti tik iš bendruomenės finansinio palaikymo.

A.Ž. Šildymo sistemos pakeitimas – buvo 2017 metų projektas. Iki tol buvę šildymo katilai buvo įrengti statant pastatą – 1964 metais. Jie buvo tokie pasenę, kad nuolat gesdavo, be to ir šildydavo neefektyviai. Aš pats kasdien eidavau į tą katilinę – mintinai visas problemas žinojau. O, kaip taisyklė, sugesdavo šildymas paprastai vakare arba savaitgaliais. Būdavo, grįžti namo, jau iš centro skambina, kad šildymo nebėra. Vėl važiuoji į darbą, kvieti specialistus. O šie atvažiuoja, kelias valandas pasidarbuoja, sutvarko, bet sumokėti paprašo net kelis tūkstančius dolerių. Ir taip per sezoną ne kartą. Kai ieškojome bendrovės, kuri galėtų mums įrengti naują šildymo sistemą, rinkomės iš kelių turimų kandidatų. Be to, reikėjo ieškoti, iš kur paimti pinigų. Dalį paaukojo žmonės, kitą dalį paėmėme iš santaupų, o likusią dalį pavyko pasiskolinti iš pačios šildymo katilus įrenginėjusios bendrovės. Tai buvo nedidelė dviejų emigrantų – airio ir lietuvio įmonė. Jie paprašė sumokėti pusę sumos – 220 tūkstančių dolerių, o kitą pusę patys paskolino be procentų. Tuos likusius pinigus pasižadėjome grąžinti jiems per dvejus metus. Įdomu tai, kad vienas iš tos bendrovės savininkų – lietuvis, kurio vaikai mokosi pas mus, Maironio lituanistinėje mokykloje ir lanko ,,Žiburėlį”. Nors dabar šildymo katilai veikia labai efektyviai ir be priekaištų, bet tas žmogus, atveždamas vaikus į Centrą, savanoriškai užsuka jų patikrinti. Taip šeimyniškai išėjo. 

Kai supranti, kad turi centru rūpintis taip, kaip savo šeimos namais, tuomet pamažu pasimato rezultatai? 

L. G. Pavyzdžiui, anksčiau mes žiemą samdydavome sniego valytojus, o vasarą – žolės pjovėjus. Tas atsieidavo nepigiai, todėl nusprendėme, kad patiems reikia nusipirkti sniego valymo ,,trokelį” ir žolės pjovimo įrangą. Tas labai pasiteisino.

A.Ž. Sniego valymui per žiemą išleisdavome apie 20 tūkstančių dolerių. Ir nebūdavome patenkinti samdomu darbu, nes tie valytojai neskubėdavo. Tarkime, sekmadienio rytą žmonės atvažiuodavo į bažnyčią, o sniego valytojai dar nepasirodę. Kai pagaliau atvažiuodavo sniegvalės, kieme būdavo pristatyta automobilių, sunku gerai nuvalyti. O dabar, kai turime savo sniegvalę, iš pat ankstaus ryto nuvalome sniegą. Visiems patogu, o ir daug sutaupome. ,,Trokelis” kainavo 33 tūkstančius dol., bet jis mums tarnauja jau beveik 10 metų. Tą patį galima pasakyti ir apie žolės pjovimą.

Mes sakome, kad centras yra mūsų antri namai. Todėl ir turime čia dirbti kaip sau, iš širdies ir šeimininkiškai. Tai nėra asmeninis verslas, bet dirbdamas tu turi žiūrėti kaip į asmeninį. Kitaip nieko nebus. Toks požiūris yra sėkmės garantas. Ir mūsų komandos nariai taip pat mąsto ir jaučia. Kad ir toks faktas: ateidami dirbti 2010 metais PLC sąskaitose radome 66,431dol., o 2018 metų gale ten buvo dešimt kartų didesnė suma. Paskolą R. Riškus salės statybai sumažinome beveik per pusę. Manome, kad yra kuo pasidžiaugti. Turime daug naujų idėjų ir planų kaip dar pagerinti Centro veiklą, padaryti efektyvesnia ir atnaujinti pastatą, kad jame būtų visiems patogu, jauku ir žmonės norėtų čia lankytis. Negalime sustoti ir toliau remontuojant ir modernizuojant Centrą.

Kas per tuos 10 vadovavimo PLC metų labiausiai įstrigo į širdį? 

L. G. Labiausia pamenu vieną aukšto rango svečių viešnagę centre. Tuometinis LR generalinis konsulas Čikagoje Marijus Gudynas pakvietė ir atsivežė Čikagoje reziduojančius ES šalių konsulus. Mes surengėme jiems ekskursiją po PLC. Aš vaikščiojau po centrą kartu su Prancūzijos konsulu. Jis man pasakė: ,,Žinai, kokia Prancūzija didelė, lyginant su Lietuva? Bet mes tokio didelio pastato už Prancūzijos ribų neturime. Didžiuokitės tuo, ką esate sukūrę.” Mums tuos žodžius išgirsti buvo labai malonu ir išdidu. Panašiai stebėjosi ir turkų konsulas, kuris čia buvo atvykęs kartu su dabartiniu Lietuvos generaliniu konsulu Mantvydu Bekešiumi žaisti krepšinio.

Mes per tuos metus sunkiai dirbome, patyrėme daug streso, bet dažnai atrodė, kad tą mūsų pastangas ir pasiektus rezultatus nedaugelis įvertina. Dažniau kritikuodavo už tai, kas nespėta padaryti. Todėl dabar, kai kas nors pasako, kad mes gerą darbą atliekame, yra puiku. Vadinasi, žmonės supranta, kad joks darbas pats nepasidaro.

A. Ž. Aš ne kartą sakiau: jeigu kas kritikuoja, vadinasi, esame matomi. Tuomet matomi ir mūsų padaryti darbai. Manau, kad moralinę teisę kritikuoti turi tie, kurie patys yra prisidėję prie PLC išlaikymo finansiškai arba savanoriaudami. Jeigu kritika teisinga – tuomet ji yra varanti į priekį, skatinanti toliau dirbti. Smagu, kad per tą laiką pavyko suburti šaunią komadą, kuri yra tarsi šeima. Smagu, kad savanoriškai dirbantys ir laiką aukojantys PLC tarybos ir valdybos nariai noriai lieka vis naujoms kadencijoms. Vadinasi, centras gyvuoja.

This article, written by our own Fundraising Coordinator, Diana Aleknaitė, was published in “Draugas” newspaper on March 7, 2019.  It tells about the 3rd annual Children’s Festival.  What was unique about this year’s event was the inclusion of Polish and Peruvian entertainers, in addition to several groups of Lithuanian folk dance groups from around the Chicagoland area.  Thanks to all of the volunteers, sponsors and donors who made this event a great success!

Vasario 24 dieną, sekmadienį, Pasaulio lietuvių centre įvyko žaisminga ir spalvinga šventė vaikams – jau 3-asis Vaikų festivalis. Pirmąkart šiemet tai tapo tarptautiniu renginiu, nes be mums jau gerai pažįstamų vaikų šokių ansamblių, repetuojančių PLC „Grandies“ bei „Suktinio“, Ruta‘s Dance studio, iš Čikagos šiaurinių rajonų atvykusių svečių „Rusnės“ kolektyvo, taip pat sulaukėme vaikų tautinių kolektyvų iš Lenkijos kultūrinio centro Lemonte bei Peru folklioro centro Čikagoje. Todėl nenuostabu, kad ir festivalio pavadinimas toks skambus „Pasaulio vaikai“ („Children of the World“).

Festivalį organizavo „Suktinio“ šokių ansamblio vadovės Lidija Ringienė, Aušra Karalienė, Miglė Gaigalas bei Giedrė Eleksytė Knieža. Neįmanoma išsiversti be tėvelių pagalbos, kurie prisidėjo prie renginio organizavimo ir vaikų užsiėmimų stotelių bei užkandžių stalo koordinavmo. Po koncerto vaikučiai piešė, karpė, vėrė karolius. Daug vaikų būriavosi prie henos tatuiruočių stalelio, kurias piešė Emilija Deržanauskas. Spalvingais balionų žaislais, kaip visada, džiugino mūsų linsmasis ponas Vytautas Vizgirda. Vaikučiams veidelius piešė  skautės savanorės, po pasirodymo vaikučiai vaišinosi pica, Baltic Food Distributing dovanotais Dadu ledais.

Vaikams smagu vieniems kitus pamatyti, pasidžiaugti, kiek gi vis dėl to nemažai yra šokančių vaikučių. Kokie gražūs ir spalvingi visų kostiumai. Dabar, kai vis sunkiau vaikus įtikinti didžiuotis savo šaknimis ir savo tautinio rūbo svarba, nepaprastai malonu buvo sulaukti ir kitataučių vaikų kolektyvų. Atsirado ir vaikų, kurie vieni kitus pažįsta iš mokyklos ir nežinojo apie vieni kitų užklasinę veiklą. Teko stebėti, kaip jie apžiūrinėjo vieni kitų kostiumus. Tai pažinimo ir mokymosi procesas. Peru tautinio kolektyvo vadovas prieš kiekvieną pasirodymą paaiškino šokio ir muzikos kilmę.

Tautinis šokis yra mūsų identitetas ir to mokydami savo vaikučius gyvendami toli nuo savo šalies, mokome juos gerbti savo šaknis, didžiuotis savo kilme. Tikiuosi, kad kitais metais tai taps dar didesne švente ir dalyvių bei žiūrovų skaičius dar paaugs. Investuokime į savo vaikus, juk jie mūsų ateitis.

An impressive, impactful and positive event occurred on Saturday, November 3, 2018,  at the Lithuanian World Center. Initiated by the Center, an amicable agreement was entered between three organizations: the Lithuanian World Center, Inc., the largest Lithuanian cultural center outside of Lithuania; the Lithuanian American Community Inc., the largest Lithuanian community outside of Lithuania; and the Lithuanian World Youth Association, Inc., an independent, non-partisan youth organization that represents the views of Lithuanian youth around the world. Sharing common goals, through this symbolic agreement we promised to support one another, to disseminate each other’s information, and to develop and implement joint projects.

Dideli, gražūs ir pozityvūs judėjimai lapkričio 3d.  PLC iniciatyva buvo pasirašyta draugiška bendradarbiavimo sutartis tarp trijų organizacijų: didžiausio lietuvių kultūrinio centro už Lietuvos ribų – Pasaulio Lietuvių Centro, Didžiausios išeivijos bendruomenės – JAV LB ir kaipgi mes judėtume į priekį be progresyvaus jaunimo – Pasaulio Lietuvių Jaunimo Sąjungos! Turėdami daug bendrų tikslų šia simboline sutartimi pasižadėjome vieni kitiems padėti gyvuoti ir stiprėti, skleisti informaciją apie šias tris organizacijas per savo informacinius kanalus bei kurti ir vykdyti bendrus projektus.

On Saturday, November 3rd, 2018, the Devbridge Group, bit&Byte, and the Lithuanian World Center sponsored a unique event, An Hour of Code, held at the Lithuanian World Center. Children between the ages of 7 and 14 learned the basics of programming. The participants were given an exciting opportunity to learn that computers can be used not only for games, but as a tool for creativity. The organizers were eager to test out this concept here at the Center to see if it should evolve into a larger project in the future. With 76 participants, the answer was made clear! We are grateful to #Devbridge and bit&Byte for making this event a success. We await your feedback and comments.

Praėjusį šeštadienį, lapkričio 3-čią dieną, Pasaulio lietuvių centre įvyko puikus naujas renginys – Kodavimo valanda 7-14 metų vaikams – bendras Devbridge, bit&Byte ir PLC projektas, skatinantis vaikus išmokti programavimo pagrindų. Prieš renginį buvo aiškus tikslas – suteikti vaikams galimybę sužinoti ir suprasti, kad kompiuteris gali būti naudojamas ne tik žaidimams, bet ir kūrybai. Tai buvo tarsi “dirvos” tyrimas, bandymas apibrėžti, ar tokio pobūdžio mokymai būtų pageidaujami nuolatos. Labai tikimės, kad 76 vaikų dalyvavimas šiame renginyje tai įrodė. To honor our most generous individual donor, Rimas Banys, the Lithuanian World Center has named its main banquet hall “Banys Family Hall”

On September 23, 2018, the Lithuanian World Center threw a special party for an extra-special friend.  Rimas (Ray) Banys is the Center’s most generous individual donor, so to honor him, the Board of Directors decided to name the banquet hall “Banys Family Hall” in Mr. Banys’ name.

The Center’s Executive Director, Artūras Žilys; its President, Linas Gylys; and its Chairman, Jurgis Riškus presided over the official ribbon-cutting and naming ceremony in the spacious room on the Center’s first floor that holds a variety of events, parties, conferences, and fundraisers.  With at least 150 guests in attendance, the ceremony included speeches, a ribbon cutting, a champagne toast, musical entertainment, and a table full of bacon buns, sweet rolls, šakotis (tree cake) and coffee.

Executive Director Artūras Žilys thanked Rimas for his generosity and loyalty to the Center.  He listed many projects that Rimas’ donations helped fund: asphalt resurfacing of a large section of the driveway into the Center; refacing of the primary entrance stairs; and a new heating/boiler system, among others.  Jurgis and Linas also voiced their gratitude for Rimas’ generosity.

Before the hall was officially named, Rimas stepped up to the podium with a speech of his own, stating that as a businessman, he values organizations that are financially strong, are run by strong leadership, and have a promising future.  The Lithuanian World Center, he stated, is one of those organizations, and therefore, deserves to be supported.  His investment in the Center is a nod to the past (keeping Lithuanian traditions alive), the present (maintaining the Center for the 38 Lithuanian organizations that work within the building) and the future (offering young Lithuanians a place to develop connections with other Lithuanians).  He invited his colleagues, friends, and others to follow his lead and donate to the Center.

After the presentation of gifts to Rimas, and the cutting of a long, red ribbon, the guests stood and raised glasses of champagne, singing several verses of “Ilgiausių metų” (the traditional Lithuanian song of celebration, “Long Life”).  The Lithuanian World Center’s own staff member, Elytė Rėklaitis (Elena Reklaitis) performed several pieces on piano along with Jackie Isely on flute.  The final three numbers were Lithuanian songs that had the guests singing and swaying along to the music.

May the Banys Family Hall continue to attract festive events, filled with friendship, song, and fun!

Rugsėjo 23d. Pasaulio lietuvių centre turėjome neeilinę šventę. Lig šiol be vardo buvusią PLC pokylių salę su dideliu džiaugsmu nuo dabar įteisiname ir oficialiai vadiname Banys šeimos sale. Tai mūsų padėka už Rimo Banio dosnią paramą Pasaulio lietuvių centrui ir tikėjimą mūsų misija. Per savo narystę Pasaulio lietuvių centre nuo 1998 m. Rimas Banys PLC jau paaukojo virš $325,000. Be p. Rimo moralinio ir finansinio palaikymo, nebūtume galėję įvykdyti daugelio paskutiniųjų kelių metų kritinių kapitalinio remonto projektų.

“Jo parama mums padėjo atlikti taip reikalingus ir svarbius Centrui projektus, kaip pastato šildymo sistemos pakeitimas, bažnyčios įėjimo laiptų remontas, naujai išasfaltuotas įvažiavimas į Centrą, ir kitus. Noriu pažymėti, kad Centras išsilaiko pats, t. y., padengia savo kasdienines išlaidas iš surenkamų ir uždirbamų lėšų. Tačiau kai mes kalbame apie kapitalinius pastato remonto projektus, tokius kaip, pavyzdžiui, minėta šildymo sistema, kuri kainavo $450,000, tada mes negalime išsiversti be tokių aukotojų, kaip Rimas, pagalbos. Ši pagalba užtikrina Centro ateitį, jo modernizavimą, laikytojų saugumą ir komfortą.  Rimai, Jus mums visiems esate tikras įkvėpimo šaltinis. Nuoširdus ačiū”. – R. Baniui dėkojo PLC vykdantysis direktorius Artūras Žilys, atidarydamas šventinę popietę. Sveikinimo ir padėkos žodį tarė PLC Tarybos pirmininkas Jurgis Riškus bei PLC Valdybos pirmininkas Linas Gylys.

Džiugu, kad Centro siunčiama informacija aukotojams yra atidžiai perskaitoma, kad kiekvienas su Centru susijęs asmuo, ar darbuotojas, ar savanoris, puikiai supranta ir kitiems aiškina, kaip šis milžiniškas pastatas veikia, po savo stogu apjungdamas 38 kitas lietuviškas organizacijas. Tai ne tik darbas – tai dalis mūsų visų tapatybės. PLC organizacijos skaidrumas ir nuosekliai planuojami projektai buvo raktas ir į R. Banio širdį. Rimas suprato projektų svarbą, atidžiai analizavo PLC tikslus ir projektų vykdymo tvarką, ir džiaugiamės, kad ryžosi investuoti į Centro ateitį.  Kaip tik tai, simboliškai perkirpęs kaspiną salės pervadinimo šventėje, Rimas Banys ir akcentavo savo kalboje susirinkusiems bendruomenės nariams. Norime pasidalinti Jo pasakyta kalba su visa lietuvių bendruomene išeivijoje.

“Ačiū Pasaulio lietuvių centrui, kad pagerbėte mane suteikdami galimybę pavadinti šią salę Banys šeimos vardu. Esu sujaudintas jūsų dėmesio ir tuo pačiu dėkingas, kad mano šeimos vardas nuo šiol bus neatskiriama šio Centro dalimi.

Mano suteikta finansinė parama yra investavimas į Pasaulio lietuvių centro ir visų čia esančių organizacijų klestėjimą. Tai investavimas į praeitį, dabartį ir ateitį. Investavimas į praeitį, nes Centre susibūrusios organizacijos, kurių misija yra išsaugoti mūsų tėvų kalbą ir tradicijas. Dabartį, nes Centras nuolatos tvarko aplinką, pastatą, stengiasi, kad jis būtų saugus ir jaukus visoms organizacijoms ir lankytojams. Ir galų gale, tai investavimas į ateitį, nes jaunimas čia gali mokytis lietuviškose mokyklose, sportuoti, šokti, dainuoti, mokytis meno arba skautauti. Ir mūsų karta turime vietą susiburti ir dalintis savo prigimties džiaugsmu Misijoje, salėse ir meno galerijoje.

Kadangi esu biznio žmogus, investuoju tik į tas organizacijas, kurios yra finansiškai stiprios, turi gerus vadovus ir galimybes augti. Pasaulio Lietuvių Centras tikrai yra tokia organizacija. Ar pastebėjote, kiek jau yra atlikta? Bet dar daug yra darbų, kurie turės būti atlikti.

Jeigu jums patinka šios permainos, kurios vyksta Centre, jeigu sutinkate, kad Centras šiuo metu yra  dinamiška, gyvybinga, stuktūriškai stabili organizacija, tuomet kviečiu jus prisijungti prie manęs ir paremti Pasaulio Lietuvių Centrą! Ir žinoma, kviečiu visus į ateities renginius, kurie vyks Banio šeimos salėje”!
